Non-Laminate Microstructures in Monoclinic-I Martensite

چکیده
We study the symmetrised rank-one convex hull of monoclinic-I martensite (a twelve-variant material) in the context of geometrically-linear elasticity. We construct sets of T3s, which are (non-trivial) symmetrised rank-one convex hulls of three-tuples of pairwise incompatible strains. In addition, we construct a fivedimensional continuum of T3s and show that its intersection with the boundary of the symmetrised rank-one convex hull is four-dimensional. We also show that there is another kind of monoclinic-I martensite with qualitatively different semi-convex hulls which, as far as we know, has not been experimentally observed. Our strategy is to combine understanding of the algebraic structure of symmetrised rank-one convex cones with knowledge of the faceting structure of the convex polytope formed by the strains.

The Mechanics of Multifunctional Materials
Nano-structured NiTi instantaneously transforms from fcc austenite via an intermediate phase (the R-phase) into monoclinic B19’ martensite. At a grain size less than a critical limit of about 50nm no transformation can be observed even upon cooling down to cryogenic temperatures. In slightly larger grains the martensite appears as a laminate of alternating twinrelated Bain correspondence varian...
متن کاملModeling of Branched Needle Microstructures at the Edge of a Martensite Laminate
We present models of the microstructure of martensite that occurs when twinned layers of martensite meet a pure variant. This microstructure often occurs below the A, temperature, with loading that favors the passage from one pure variant of martensite to another. This microstructure gives a mechanism for variant rearrangement. In this microstructure, the layers are observed to pinch down to sh...
متن کاملThe e&ective energy and laminated microstructures in martensitic phase transformations
We study the behavior of crystals that undergo martensitic transformations. On cooling, the high-temperature phase (austenite) transforms to the martensite phase changing its crystalline symmetry. The lower crystalline symmetry of the martensite gives rise to several variants of martensite. Each variant has an associated transformation strain. These variants accommodate themselves (according to...

We investigate the cyclic behavior of laminate microstructures in finite-strain crystal plasticity and the resulting stress-strain response, based on a variational, incremental description of the microstructure evolution. The nonconvex free energy density in multiplicative singleand multi-slip plasticity gives rise to the formation of fine-scale deformation structures, experimentally observed a...

The strength of mixed microstructures of bainite and martensite can peak at an intermediate volume fraction of martensite has been published by recently experimental studies. A quantitative interpretation of these observations is achieved by modelling the mechanical properties of mixed microstructures of bainite and martensite. The peak in the curve of the strength as a function of the volume f...
